It Came from Outer Space is a 1953 American science fiction film, the first in the 3D process from Universal-International.

It was produced by William Alland, directed by Jack Arnold (Tarantula; Creature from the Black Lagoon; The Incredible Shrinking Man) from a screenplay by Harry Essex (Octaman). The film’s script is based on Ray Bradbury’s original story treatment, The Meteor.

photo-le-meteore-de-la-nuit-it-came-from-outer-space-1953-5

Bradbury said “I wanted to treat the invaders as beings who were not dangerous, and that was very unusual.” He offered two story outlines to the studio, one with malicious aliens, the other with benign aliens. “The studio picked the right concept, and I stayed on.”

In 2004, Bradbury published in one volume all four versions of his screen treatment for It Came From Outer Space.

Universal’s make-up department submitted two alien designs for consideration by studio executives; the rejected design was saved and then later used as the “Metaluna Mutant” in Universal’s 1955 science fiction film This Island Earth.

The theremin heavy score was composed by Herman Stein who also composed the eerie music for, among others, the sci-fi and horror movies Revenge of the Creature and This Island Earth.

Plot:

Author and amateur astronomer John Putnam (Richard Carlson) and schoolteacher Ellen Fields (Barbara Rush) watch a large meteorite crash near the small town of Sand Rock, Arizona. They awaken a neighbor, who has a helicopter, and all three fly to the crash site. Putnam climbs down into the crater and notices a partially buried round object in the crater’s pit.

photo-le-meteore-de-la-nuit-it-came-from-outer-space-1953-2

He comes to the realization, after he sees a six-sided hatchway close, that this isn’t a meteorite but a large alien spaceship. The hatchway noise starts a landslide that completely buries the craft. Putnam’s story is later scoffed at by Sand Rock’s sheriff (Charles Drake) and the local news media. Even Ellen Fields is unsure about what to believe but still agrees to assist Putnam in his investigation…

Reviews:

“Direction by Jack Arnold whips up an air of suspense in putting the Harry Essex screenplay on film, and there is considerable atmosphere of reality created, which stands up well enough if the logic of it all is not examined too closely… story proves to be good science-fiction for the legion of film fans who like scare entertainment, well done.” Variety

“Dark desert roads and sudden moments of fear underline Arnold’s ability as a director of Science Fiction films, and Essex’s/Bradbury’s lines match his images superbly.” Hardy, Phil (editor), The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Science Fiction, Aurum Press, 1984.

“Although caught between two eras of filmmaking, It Came From Outer Space remains contemporary even to this day because of its theme of xenophobia — the fear of outsiders — a message as apropos in these culturally-divisive times as it was during the Cold War. For as long as mankind can’t seem to get along with itself, It Came From Outer Space‘s plea for tolerance and understanding will remain relevant.” Monstrous Movie Music

Found Footage 3D is a 2016 horror American film written and directed by Steven DeGennaro and co-produced by DeGennaro, Charles Mulford, and Kim Henkel (co-writer of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). It is the first found footage horror movie shot natively in 3D.

Plot:

A group of low-budget filmmakers set out to make Spectre of Death, “the first 3D found footage horror film,” but find themselves *in* the first 3D found footage horror film when the evil entity from their movie escapes into their behind-the-scenes footage…

Found-Footage-3D-1-600x338

Reviews:

Found Footage 3D remains an entertaining watch despite its missteps, and it’s still far better than most ff films as it delivers solid performances, smart observations, and a fun ride. Its horror elements are lacking, but while you’ll never be frightened you’ll also never be bored — and that’s no small accomplishment for a ff film.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects

“An exercise in Quaker oat-box metafiction, this pokes fun at particular failings of the found footage genre (including a dig at the they-keep-filming-because-they-need-the-light gambit of Hollow) and questions why anyone would want to tread the Blair Witch Project path yet again. An argument about Derek’s preference for CGI over practical effects skips past objection ‘but we can’t afford good CGI’ and when the spook shows up, it looks more like a black blur than a monster…” The Kim Newman Web Site

found-footage-3d

“It doesn’t quite know who its pitching too (those who hate found footage or those who love it) and so it ends up a bit bland. A very nice cameo from Scott Weinberg (who also produces) is a funny addition and Allen Perry has some real laugh out loud moments, but Found Footage 3D just feels like every movie you’ve ever seen from the genre. A shame.” Luke Owen, Flickering Myth

“The scares (and the film does have them) are chilling and, in at least one instance, shocking. This particular scare comes from nowhere, it is completely unexpected and changes the landscape of the film going forward. The 3D also works well and has a purpose to be there above just being a clever gimmick.” Kat Hughes, The Hollywood News

Found Footage 3D is an absolute riot that’s also quite scary, setting up a multitude of payoffs that deliver a flurry of satisfying punches. It truly is a modern indie gem that really, really deserves a place among the greats. Horror fans are going to fall in love with DeGennaro’s film that’s pure heart, but also expresses similar frustrations we all have as genre fans. Seek this one out…” Mr Disgusting, Bloody Disgusting

amityville-3d

Amityville 3-D – also known as Amityville III: The Demon – is a 1983 American horror film directed by Richard Fleischer (10 Rillington Place; See No Evil; The Boston Strangler) from a screenplay by David Ambrose [as William Wales].

It was the last to be released theatrically until the 2005 remake because it was a flop at the box office, taking only $6.3 million against a $6 million cost.

It was one of a spate of 3-D films released in the early 1980s. As with Friday the 13th Part III and Jaws 3-D, this film was shot using the ArriVision 3-D process – coordinated, for this film, by cinematographer Tibor Sands.

amityville-frisbee

Due to a lawsuit between the Lutz family and producer Dino De Laurentiis over the storyline, Amityville 3-D was not referred to as a sequel. However, the film does make reference to the original story. The character of John Baxter is loosely based on Stephen Kaplan who at the time was trying to prove the Lutzes’ story was a hoax.

Amityville 3-D 1983

Opening plot:

After he exposes a pair of con artists with his partner Melanie (Candy Clark) in the infamous 112 Ocean Avenue house in Amityville journalist John Baxter (Tony Roberts) is persuaded to purchase the house by real estate agent Clifford Sanders (John Harkins).

While preparing the house for John, Clifford investigates footsteps in the attic. He is locked in the room, where a swarm of flies attack and kill him. John believes Clifford died of a stroke, even after Melanie shows him some photos she took of the real estate agent before his death which depict him as a rotting corpse.

amityville-3d-death

While John is at work, he nearly dies in a malfunctioning elevator. Simultaneously, Melanie experiences bizarre occurrences in John’s house. She is found later, cowering and hysterical against the wall.

Later, while looking over blowups of the photos of Clifford, Melanie discovers a demonic-looking face in the pictures. When she attempts to show the photos to John, she is killed in a horrific car accident. Melanie’s death is ruled accidental by everyone.

While John is away one day his daughter Susan (Lori Loughlin) and her friend Lisa (Meg Ryan) and two boyfriends use a Ouija board in the attic. The game tells them Susan is in danger…

Reviews:

Amityville 3-D is a fun and cheesy little scarefest that isn’t particularly frightening but does provide for one or two jumps, some surprising plot turns and a couple of nasty effects, all while trying it’s damnedest to poke you in the eye with a variety of objects at every opportunity. In general you get some pretty decent performances in this one…” Matt Joseph, DVD Active

amityville3d

“The story itself, involving the daughter being swallowed up by the forces which apparently live in a well in the basement of the house, moves along at a snail’s pace enlivened from time to time by some nice special effects and 3-D images … The film would have worked better played for laughs.” Variety, 31-12-82

” …Amityville 3-D—one-dimensional in every way but its hokey visuals—is too poorly written, awkwardly staged, and pathologically stupid to register as campy fun. But at least it confirms that, if you’re a resident of the Devil’s earthbound vacation home, you can expect paranormal harassment even when riding in faraway office building elevators.” Nick Schager, Slant magazine

a35

“Whereas Amityville II morphed into an awful imitation of The Exorcist, this morphs into a wretched rip-off of Poltergeist, as a group of paranormal investigators snoop around the house and eventually find a creature who looks like a distant cousin of Dogma‘s excremental demon.” Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing

amityville-3-d-skeleton

Amityville 3-D is sort of like if John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness was in 3-D and had all the good parts removed. It sort of has that same vibe – a huge team comes into a building setting up various gadgets to test for paranormal activity, eventually locating a portal. But it’s all just so uninteresting.” Chris Coffel, Bloody Disgusting

“It knows it’s a haunted house film. It lacks the European flourishes and eccentricities of its predecessor and the doom-drenched urgency of the original. It’s simply a series of creepy set pieces that are designed to jump at the viewer and the entire screeching evil-entity littered opus is grounded by rock-solid work by a no-nonsense cast.” Chris Alexander, ComingSoon.net

‘When desires turn evil…’

Raaz 3D (translation: “Secret 3D”) – aka Raaz 3 and Raaz 3: The Third Dimension – is a 2012 Indian Bollywood horror film directed by Vikram Bhatt (Raaz RebootCreature; 1920) from a screenplay by Shagufta Rafique (Alone; Raaz: The Mystery Continues). It stars Bipasha Basu, Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta and is the third entry in the Raaz franchise.

The film was released to mixed critical reception. However, it emerged as a major commercial success in India and is the highest-grossing film in the Raaz trilogy as well as the highest grossing Hindi horror film ever.

Opening plot:

Shanaya (Bipasha Basu) is an actress at the height of her success. She gets offered the best roles and wins all the awards she is nominated for. In addition, she also has a passionate affair with a handsome director named Aditya (Emraan Hashmi).

bipasha-basu-in-raaz-3-movie-7

This all ends when a younger actress, Sanjana (Esha Gupta) makes her film debut. In place of Shanaya, Sanjana comes into spotlight and begins to snatch away her awards. Suddenly, Shanaya seems forgotten and everybody only wants to work with Sanjana.

Soon enough, Shanaya sees her career fading away and her envy slowly becomes craziness. She begins to turn to black magic and makes it her goal in life to destroy Sanjana’s career and make her the pain of loss…

Reviews:

“Director Vikram Bhatt doesn’t miss an opportunity for a callback (you didn’t think you’d seen the last of that creepy clown in the photo with Sanjana, did you?). There are some cool sets as well, from Shanaya’s glamorous apartment to the eerie pond in the slum where she bargains with the evil spirit.” Kathy Gibson, Access Bollywood

raaz3

“Within this genre, Raaz 3 has an interesting set up, but like most Hindi films it takes too long to tell it and relies on too many clichés, eg invoking the spirits in a graveyard; the evil woman wearing black, the victim wearing white; scary clowns etc. The dialogue is often so ridiculous that proceedings become involuntarily funny…” Udita Jhunjhunwala, Business of Cinema

“The much-touted flying cockroaches, I am sorry to report, are not scary at all – not even in 3-D. The rest of the time the film meanders its way through expeditions to the kingdom of spirits – long-drawn dream sequences in which our protagonists have a chance to physically battle embodied versions (heavy chains, pools of water, axes) of their disembodied fears – via the usual collection of psychiatrists, doctors and tantriks in graveyards.” Trisha Gupta, First Post

raaz-3-movie-poster-20

“Bhatt has made a number of scary movies, but here he doesn’t offer much that’s new or original, relying instead on a blaring soundtrack and standard-issue fright elements such as a crazed clown, buckets of blood and a maggoty corpse on the loose.” Lisa Tsering, The Hollywood Reporter

‘They were perfectly trained for one task….manslaughter!’

Rottweiler: The Dogs of Hell, also known as Rottweiler and Dogs of Hell is a 1982 American horror/thriller film directed by Worth Keeter III starring Earl Owensby, Bill Gribble and Robert Bloodworth. The film was made and released as a 3-D film, with effects by Chris Condon.

The US military has bred and trained rottweilers, which have now escaped. And they are heading for a peaceful community named Lake Lure. What they did not count on, was the local sheriff (Owensby)…

Reviews:

“It could have maybe done with one less side plot and a bit more on screen carnage, but there are a lot of deaths and a fair dose of the red stuff even if it’s just lazily sloshed around. Being originally made to cash in on the 80’s 3D boom, this is full of guns, hands and darts being poked and thrown at the screen too, which adds to the cheesy charm of it all.” David Brook, Blueprint: Review

“A classic killer dog film worth watching. The movie does have some flaws and slow spots, but overall it’s cool and enjoyable! […] some good attack scenes, a decent amount of blood (though I expected more since a rottweiler is a big animal), and a plausible enough storyline.” The Undertaker, Buried.com

“Tom McIntyre’s script takes forever to get yipping and Worth Keeter directs without building suspense or characters. Producer Owensby plays the sheriff but he’s one-dimensional. Inconsequential.” John Stanley, Creature Features

In the picturesque Bavarian town of Oberammergau, two friends, Markus and Thomas, are using the instructions found in an old Jewish diary to gain access to a World War II underground military base formerly codenamed: CERUSIT.

Used by the Nazis as a secret research institute, there are shrouded rumors to this day about the lost gold of the Third Reich. The entrance to the cave system, however, lies right within the restricted area of a U.S. military base… the first of many problems Markus and Thomas will have to face.

In the UK, Bunker of the Dead is released on DVD on 23 April 2018 by Altitude Film Distribution.

Review:

“It never consists of anything more than us watching the camera-eye viewpoint of Patrick Jahns as he runs about the bunker shooting and battering zombies while his off-screen voice yells with glee at each kill. There is no plot development beyond a string of kills one after the other…” Richard Scheib, Moria
